Narcisa Pricope
Mississippi State Associate Vice President for Research and GRI research affiliate, Narcisa Pricope, wrote an article for The Conversation exploring expanding aridness worldwide and its consequences on cocoa cultivation. She writes how top cocoa producing areas such as West Africa and Brazil are experiencing increasingly arid conditions that make it difficult to care for crops such as the cacao tree, which produces the beans used to create cocoa. She maps out fixes—ecological agriculture, restoration of soils, and water management—that can help reverse the trend. As land conditions change, cocoa will become rarer and costlier, emphasizing the global need to act on preserving key environmental and agricultural assets, Pricope writes.
