Decision Boosts Unmanned Aircraft Sector in Mississippi

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today issued the following statement regarding the announcement that Insitu, Inc., a leading subsidiary of the Boeing Company, has established an office in Starkville to develop unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) technologies.
 
"I am pleased to welcome Insitu to Mississippi.  The location of this leading unmanned aircraft systems company in Mississippi is evidence of private sector interest in the technologies and polices being developed in our state.  This development, in conjunction with the FAA center of excellence led by Mississippi State University, will enhance job creation, research and educational opportunities that will benefit the nation and the world."
 
Cochran, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, helped secure committee approval last month to increase FY2017 funding for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) UAS research account to $17.6 million.  This funding world directly support work of the FAA Unmanned Aerial Systems Center of Excellence.  As with previous federal funding, the FY2017 funding will generate similar private sector investment.  (http://1.usa.gov/1SOCXkF) 
 
The Insitu move was announced in New Orleans Wednesday by company officials with representatives from Mississippi State University and the Mississippi Development Authority at the annual trade show for the Association of Unmanned Vehicles International, the world's leading forum for unmanned technology.
