Titanium alloys are important for a wide range of applications especially where their high strength to weight ratio is valued. Although the effect of processing conditions on the mechanical performance have been well documented, there is limited information about the specific effect of heat treatment schedules on the dynamic behavior of alpha+beta titanium alloys. Alpha+beta titanium alloys are one of the most important titanium alloys as they offer a good combination of mechanical resistance, fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance. In this study, we performed several aging schedules on TIMETAL 64 (alpha+ beta, 6 Al, 4 V) and TIMETAL 639 (alpha+beta, 6.5 Al, 1.7 Mo, 1.7 V, 0.3 Si) and characterized the resulting microstructure with electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) before and after processing. To this end, this study targets to conduct appropriate heat treatment protocol to compare the effect of the proposed heat treatment on the quasi static (10-3/s) and dynamic (103/s) behavior of TIMETAL 64 and recently established TIMETAL 639 for applications which need high impact resistance.
